Elgar, Edward

Elgar, Edward
(1857–1934)
A significant contributor to late romantic European music and possibly the greatest English composer of his generation, Edward Elgar is best known for his major works, which include The Dream of Gerontius and Variations on an Original ThemeEnigma. ” His less substantial Pomp & Circumstance Marches , however, became standards of popular national sentiment. Most notably, A. C. Benson’s Land of Hope & Glory, set to Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance March No.1, is to this day sung at the last night of the Prom Concerts, its words evoking the patriotism of power.
